Last year, it was brought to our attention that there was gentleman hailing from the Big Apple by the name of Dandy Wellington. He has brought us back to the roaring 20's with his nostalgic sound and style. Recently, we caught up with Dandy Wellington and he was kind enough to have a chat with us. In no particular order, get to know him and head to one of his shows.
You once said, “You dress for who you want to be.” That is a great quote; please elaborate on it. How would you define your style?
Well its been said that you must dress for the job you want. I agree, but it goes beyond that. The way we present ourselves can often be an indication of who we are and what we expect from the world. I believe it is essential not only to work towards your goals, but dress for them.
Who are some people who have inspired or influenced you?
Fred Astaire, Sammy Davis Jr., Gene Kelly , J. C Leyendecker, Ralph Lauren, Fats Waller, Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway.
When did you know that you wanted to create a band? How did you guys meet?
I think every American kid wants to be in a band at some point, but for me, traditional jazz and swing era music have always been loves of mine. Like everything, the band and style of music developed and matured.
You have quite the collection of jackets. Do you have them made or do you find them? Which jacket is your favorite?
Most of my clothes are vintage and some are custom. I really don't have any favorites, but of course you rediscover certain pieces once you buy new ones.
Upcoming shows: Tell us where we can catch you and your band performing in the near future.
When will you come out for a west coast swing?
I would love to have a little west coast tour, but nothing has come up as a catalyst for such a trip just yet.
